CHADES CHALLENGE XLII: CLAUSTROPHOBIC KELPIES

Hey everyone, I am so exited this is my last post of 2010!, and what a better way to end it then with a Chades Challenge for the ever popular Pixar animator Austin Madison! I Finally had the chance to meet Austin in person at the Super Big Micro Gallery held at Gallery Nucleus. He is a really great guy and I hope I have the chance to work with him in the future.

This weeks challenge was Claustrophobic Kelpie and I got to say I had to much fun with this challenge! There is nothing I love more than creatures from mythos, plus I got to learn a few things about what a kelpie is. According to Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You illustrated by the amazing Tony Diterlizzi, a kelpie is a ghastly water spirt that assumes the form of a grayish black horse. The kelpie then devours anyone who attempts to ride it. Also from various other sources on the web I learned, that they have sticky seal skin, also take the form of beautiful girls, and are part of celtic myth.

Above is my take on a Kelpie that feels if though the life saver stuck around her neck is closing in around her. The illustration where done in water color, prism pencil, and prism marker
I hope everyone enjoys, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  3. I love that you can portray the struggle she is having getting the life saver off! Good stuff! Shall I be on the look out for your contribution in future Pixar animations?
